After a hard fought battle and a fully packed gym, the Caledonia Warriors find themselves in the Section Finals after defeating Pine Island, 70-57.
Five minutes into the game, Caledonia was 3 for 3 on three point shots (Andrew Goergen, Sam Barthel, and Owen King) and had an early 9-6 lead. After a 6-0 run by Pine Island, the Warriors battled back to get the lead at 13-12.
A back and forth game found scores of 18-16 and 21-18 in the first half. A quick run late in the first put Caledonia on top 28-20. The dust settled at half with a 36-26 Caledonia lead, led by Owen King with 19.
Out of half, the Warriors slowed the game down a bit and changed their offense. Their strategy...make Pine Island's 6'9 forward come out and guard Caledonia quick explosive guards. Caledonia was able to keep the ball on offense for over a three minute stretch at one point. Making Pine Island's big guy uncomfortable, Andrew Goergen put a quick move on him and drove to the basket for an easy lay up. Caledonia's strategy worked as Pine Island made substitutions and switched defenses while the Pine Island student section chanted "boring", Caledonia maintained their lead.
Up 60-45 with 3 minutes to go, Andrew Goergen then fouled out after playing an excellent game, he finished with 7 points.
5 quick points by Pine Island brought the score to 10 with 2 minutes and 37 seconds to go. Caledonia held their lead and both teams substituted new players in for the final minute of the game, the final seconds ticked off with a 70-57 Caledonia Victory.

Caledonia now advances to the section final where they look to push past Lake City for another trip to the State Tournament, that game is Thursday March 16th at 6PM.
